Wolf hood, blower and downdraft repair

Wall hoods, island hoods, downdrafts and the in-line or remote blowers that serve them. Salt air kills blower bearings on the coast, and a tight house starves the hood no matter how big the motor is.

Symptoms

What people describe when they call

Ventilation is the appliance people accept as broken for longest, because it fails gradually and nothing burns. A hood that has lost a third of its airflow still makes noise, still has lights, and still looks exactly the same. The kitchen just takes twenty minutes to clear instead of five, and everyone adapts.

Salt air and the blower

On the coast this is the single most common cause we find. A blower wheel spins at a few thousand rpm, and it does so in air that, in 32084 and 32080, carries salt off the Matanzas and the inlet every day of the year. Salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air onto whatever it has settled on — so a blower housing in a beachside kitchen stays damp in a way an inland one does not.

Two failures follow. Bearings dry, then roughen, then whine; that is the hood that got loud without getting stronger. And the wheel itself accumulates a film of grease and salt that is never even, so it loses balance. An unbalanced wheel vibrates, the vibration accelerates the bearing wear, and the two faults feed each other until the motor will not start on low and only catches on high.

If your hood serves a rooftop or remote blower, the housing is outdoors and the clock runs faster still.

The house is often the problem, not the hood

A hood does not create air. It moves it, and every cubic foot it pushes outside has to be replaced by a cubic foot coming in from somewhere. In a leaky 1920s house that happens through the walls without anyone noticing. In a house built in the last twenty years — Palencia, Murabella, SilverLeaf, the newer streets in King & Bear — the envelope is tight enough that a powerful hood simply cannot get the air.

The symptoms are distinctive and they are not motor faults. The hood is loud because the blower is working against a pressure it cannot overcome. Doors are harder to open with the fan on. A gas appliance elsewhere in the house may struggle. Replacing the blower will not fix any of it; providing a make-up air path will.

We measure the pressure difference before recommending anything, because there is no point selling a motor to a house that needs a vent.

Ducting, dampers and the old city

Duct is where design errors hide. Every elbow costs airflow, and a run that was turned twice to get around a beam has already given away a good share of the capacity. Downtown, where hoods have to be routed through masonry and coquina walls into whatever path the structure allows, the runs are frequently longer and more contorted than any specification would permit — and there is often no honest alternative.

Exterior dampers are the other quiet failure. A damper flap that has corroded open lets outside air, and outside humidity, straight back into the kitchen when the fan is off. A flap that has corroded shut chokes the hood entirely. Both are inexpensive parts and both are outside, which is why they get missed.

Downdrafts

A downdraft that rises partway and stops is nearly always mechanical: the lift mechanism, its gearing, or a limit switch that is reporting the wrong end of travel. Grease that has run down the inside of the vent and hardened around the mechanism accounts for a good share of them. It is a repair that starts with cleaning and measuring the motor’s current draw, not with ordering a lift assembly.
