World Golf Village is the western edge of our map — off International Golf
Parkway, well inland of the Intracoastal, and a genuinely different environment
from the beachside ZIPs even though the mailing address says St. Augustine. Salt
does not reach here in any meaningful quantity, so the faults are about how these
kitchens are built and how they are powered.

## Big open kitchens, long duct runs

The housing stock is largely from the 2000s onward and the kitchens reflect it:
open to the living space, island-centred, and physically large. That layout is
pleasant to cook in and hard to ventilate.

An island hood has no walls to help it capture. It depends entirely on being the
right size for the appliance beneath it, hung at the right height, and moving
enough air — and its duct usually has to travel further, with more turns, than a
wall hood's would. Every elbow costs airflow. A run that has been turned twice to
clear a truss has already given away a serious fraction of the capacity printed
on the badge, and no motor can buy it back.

So the ventilation complaint we hear most in 32092 is not a dead blower. It is
"the fan is loud and the kitchen still smells of last night's dinner". That is a
capture-and-duct problem, diagnosed by measuring airflow at the hood rather than
by replacing a motor that is working perfectly.

Where the blower is matters too. These houses often use an in-line blower in the
attic or a remote unit on the roof, precisely because it is quieter in the room.
It is also out of earshot, so the bearing noise that would have warned you a year
early never reaches the kitchen, and the first symptom is reduced capture. A
remote blower is also a different service job: it needs attic or roof access
booked into the visit rather than discovered on arrival, so tell us where yours
sits when you call.

## The tight-envelope problem

The other consequence of recent construction is the envelope. Houses out here are
sealed to a standard a 1920s house downtown never approached, and a hood cannot
exhaust air the house will not admit. When the make-up air path is inadequate the
blower works against a pressure it was not designed for: it gets loud, it moves
less, and exterior doors become noticeably harder to pull open with the fan on
high.

That is a house problem wearing an appliance costume. We measure the pressure
difference before recommending anything, because there is no honest way to sell a
blower to a kitchen that needs a vent.

## Islands are harder to service than they look

An appliance in an island is surrounded on four sides by joinery and on at least
one by seating. A rangetop or cooktop dropped into an island stone top is
serviced from below through the cabinet, which means clearing the cupboard,
working on your back in the space a dishwasher would occupy, and — if the fault
is on the gas side — reaching a manifold that was installed before the stone went
on. None of that is difficult. All of it takes time, and it is the reason an
island call is scheduled with more of it than a wall run.

Two things make that visit shorter. Clear the cabinet under and around the
appliance before we arrive. And if there is a shut-off or a dedicated breaker,
know where it is; in houses this size the panel is rarely near the kitchen.

## Storm outages, and boards that fail later

Northeast Florida averages on the order of sixty-eight thunderstorm days a year,
and St. Johns County has taken multi-day outages inside living memory — Matthew
in 2016, Irma in 2017, Helene in 2024. Built-in cooking appliances are full of
electronics: control boards, relay boards, spark modules, display assemblies and
the harnesses between them.

The part worth knowing is that they often do not fail on the day. An appliance
that came back on after the power returned and behaved normally for a month can
then start doing something erratic — a display that resets, a burner that ignites
only sometimes, an oven that loses its clock — and the outage never gets
mentioned because it seems unrelated. It frequently is not. Tell us the date of
the last outage even if the appliance worked afterwards; it changes what we
measure first and it can save an hour of chasing a mechanical fault that is not
there.

## Getting here

World Golf Village is the longest regular drive we make, out along International
Golf Parkway west of I-95, and we schedule it accordingly — usually as a morning

is worth saying, since the name invites the assumption, that the World Golf Hall
